August 29, 2014 By Michelle Erickson

PhDs 02 Social Media Marketing - with Aviad Eilam

Aviad Eilam takes us behind the scenes for a closer look at the field of social media marketing and advertising.

QUOTES FROM AVIAD

“In most cases, from my experience, non-academic jobs are not that interested in your dissertation topic.”

“Many tech companies hire linguists with experience in natural language processing or computational linguistics.”

“Social media within big companies is usually just one branch of marketing.”

“Digital marketing is relatively young, and it’s constantly changing and evolving.”

Best career advice I ever received:

Be assertive but also patient - things will often work out if you give them a chance.

My professional philosophy in a nutshell:

Be a "big head" - a Hebrew term for someone who sees the big picture, takes initiative, and goes beyond the immediate task at hand.

Which is more important: luck, smarts, or know-how?

Smarts. Know-how can be learned (often quite easily, if you have the smarts) and luck, I believe, isn't really random, but rather comes to those who are prepared.

If I had to do it all over again, I would…

... spend more time enjoying myself in graduate school and developing non-academic interests.
